Anita Pomerantz

Anita Pomerantz, Conversation Analysist

Anita is a Conversation Analyst who studies how people agree and disagree, seek and give information, and negotiate responsibility for blameworthy and praiseworthy deeds in interpersonal, medical, and legal contexts. She has published over 50 articles, made about 100 presentations of her research, and was an editorial board member on several language-related journals. She served as Chair of the Language and Social Interaction Divisions in both the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association. She received the Garfinkel-Sacks Award for Distinguished Scholarship in a section of the American Sociology Association in 2017, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Conversation Analysis in 2018, and the Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award in a section of the National Communication Society in 2000. Her book Asking and telling in conversation was published by Oxford University Press in 2021.
